The tape is self-adhesive, linerless, and enables efficient unwinding and overlapping.

UK – Saica Group has introduced its first recycled paper adhesive tape, strengthening its circular economy strategy and expanding its portfolio of fibre-based flexible solutions.
The innovation was jointly developed by the Group’s divisions, Saica Flex and Saica Paper, creating a closed-loop solution fully integrated within the company’s operations.
Made from 100% recycled fibres sourced internally, the paper is produced by Saica Paper, converted into adhesive tape by Saica Flex and then used to secure Saica Paper’s own paper reels.
The company describes the process as a circular model that “starts and ends in the same place,” reinforcing fibre recovery and internal material efficiency.
Designed for firm adhesion to paper and cardboard substrates, the linerless, self-adhesive tape enables efficient unwinding and overlapping, broadening its potential use cases beyond reel protection.
A key differentiator is its repulpability. While many paper-based adhesive tapes face recyclability constraints due to coatings and adhesives that hinder fibre recovery, Saica says it has achieved an optimal balance between technical performance and recyclability following extensive R&D trials.
The tape can be repulped, allowing fibres to be recovered in standard paper recycling processes and eliminating the need for non-repulpable alternatives.
The product is also compatible with standard reel-wrapping machines, requiring no additional capital investment or equipment modifications. According to the company, it integrates seamlessly across all reel types and existing production lines.
Scaling fibre-based flexible solutions
Federico Asensio, Technology & Innovation Director at Saica Group, described the development as a first step in expanding paper-based adhesive applications.
He noted that the Group sees further opportunities to extend the technology across additional packaging formats as part of its broader sustainability roadmap.
The recycled paper tape has already been implemented at Saica Paper’s facility in El Burgo de Ebro, Spain, and is scheduled for rollout across other European paper production lines.
Industry analysts note that fibre-based alternatives are gaining traction as packaging producers respond to tightening recyclability requirements and corporate sustainability targets.
By aligning material sourcing, conversion and end use within a single value chain, Saica’s latest innovation highlights how vertical integration can accelerate circular packaging solutions while maintaining operational efficiency and performance standards.
