Siegwerk expands CIRKIT portfolio, paving the way for more recyclable packaging solutions

GERMANY – Siegwerk, a global leader in printing inks and coatings, has expanded its CIRKIT product range by introducing a series of functional coatings designed to enhance the recyclability and reusability of packaging materials.

These coatings maintain essential properties like barriers and sealability while aligning with circular economy principles.

As part of its strategic commitment to sustainable packaging, Siegwerk has established a new global business unit focused on Circular Economy Coatings.

This initiative, highlighted in the company’s latest Sustainability Report, underscores Siegwerk’s dedication to sustainability, human rights, ethical supply chain management, and carbon emissions reduction.

The Sustainability Report reveals key milestones, such as appointing a human rights officer and launching a comprehensive Supplier Sustainability Program, emphasizing the importance of human rights and sustainable procurement.

Siegwerk has also introduced a Business Partner Code of Conduct, outlining expectations for ethical practices among its partners.

In collaboration with TÜV SÜD Industrie Service, the company conducted a detailed carbon audit, validating its Corporate and Product Carbon Footprints.

Siegwerk has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality for scope one and scope two emissions by 2025, with its targets validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

“Our commitment to sustainability is at the core of everything we do. In this report, we are proud to share our progress and provide concrete examples of how we are fulfilling our commitment,” said Alina Marm, Siegwerk’s Global Head of Sustainability and Circular Economy.

At the August Specialty Papers Europe 2024 event, Siegwerk unveiled innovative paper coatings designed to enhance the barrier and heat-seal properties of paper packaging without compromising recyclability.

These solutions address the growing demand for sustainable packaging and reduce reliance on plastic laminates.

The newly launched CIRKIT range includes water-based coatings that can be seamlessly integrated into standard paper mill processes.

Notable products in Siegwerk’s CIRKIT range include CIRKIT BAR SEAL CT 1420 and CT 1422, which are multifunctional coatings that deliver both barrier and heat-seal properties.

These coatings stand out by eliminating the need for plastic lamination, offering a sustainable alternative for packaging applications without compromising performance.

Another key innovation in the range is CIRKIT BAR CT 2513, a robust barrier coating designed to meet the stringent requirements of packaging applications.

This product ensures compatibility with waste paper recycling processes, aligning with industry demands for sustainable and circular solutions.

“More brand owners and manufacturers are turning to renewable, recyclable materials for sustainable packaging,” said Oliver Waddington, Head of Business Development and Circular Economy Coatings at Siegwerk.

“This shift requires innovations to functionalize fibre-based materials like paper while ensuring compatibility with waste paper recycling.”

By advancing functional coatings and fostering circular economy solutions, Siegwerk continues to lead the charge toward a more sustainable future for packaging.
