CHILE – Soy Silvestre has embraced sustainability by switching to compostable flexible packaging for its wheatgrass shots, ensuring the product’s protection while preserving its nutritional value.
Packaging liquid products, especially in compostable materials, can be challenging, but this innovative solution aligns with the company’s eco-friendly mission.
The packaging, supplied by Chilean converter Green Heart Solutions, features a high-barrier cellulose NatureFlex film layer from Futamura, laminated with a biofilm to create a hermetic seal. This allows Soy Silvestre to produce flexible sachets that are both durable and compostable.
In addition to streamlining the packaging process with automation, these sachets protect the product throughout its lifecycle—from initial wrapping to freezing, distribution, and defrosting. The packaging ensures a four-month shelf life while reducing environmental impact.
Compliant with Chile’s PUSU Law No. 21368 (single-use plastics law), the compostable sachets are certified by BPI, Dincertco, and TUV for both home and industrial composting.
This packaging innovation earned Green Heart Solutions second place in the food packaging category at the Circlepack – Viva Packaging 2024 fair, recognizing their development of flexible compostable film.
Ziomara Ferrer of Green Heart Solutions expressed her excitement about the award: “We are thrilled with Circlepack’s recognition. About five years ago, we started working with Futamura’s NatureFlex films, made from renewable wood pulp.
“These compostable films create a circular lifecycle by turning into nutrients for the soil. They provide excellent barriers to humidity and fats, preserving flavors and aromas.
“Laminated with certified biopolymers, they form strong hermetic seals for various applications. One of our greatest achievements has been successfully packaging fresh juice, a challenge we’re delighted to have overcome.”
Early this year, Artisanal tea brand Hoogly partnered with flexible packaging specialist Parkside to develop a compostable envelope for a new range of individually wrapped teabags for the hotel and hospitality sector.
The new packaging uses a laminate that combines Parkside’s compostable Park2Nature material with a high-performance metallized compostable film, NatureFlex NM, sourced from film specialist Futamura.
The finished envelopes, which are TÜV certified as home compostable, provide a high barrier performance that keeps Hoogly’s tea fresh, while also locking in the vibrant aromas of each blend.
TÜV certification means the pack has undergone extensive testing and will break down in domestic compost heaps within 26 weeks, and within 12 weeks in an industrial composting facility.
It aligns with the sustainability goals of Hoogly, which is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its packaging.
