Under CEO Alfred Kandara, the company has rebranded and expanded its offerings beyond pre-press solutions.

KENYA – Typotech Imaging Systems, a leading provider of printing and packaging technologies in East Africa, has announced bold plans to expand its footprint across the region as it shifts focus from traditional commercial printing to the fast-growing packaging sector.
Formerly known as Imaging Solutions, the company rebranded in 2022 under the leadership of CEO Alfred Kandara to reflect a broader mandate, offering end-to-end solutions across the entire print and packaging value chain.
Typotech now supplies pre-press, press, and finishing equipment, in addition to workflow software, consumables, and technical training services.
“We redefined our brand because the industry has changed,” Kandara said. “The growth is no longer in traditional commercial printing. Packaging is the future, and that’s where we’re investing.”
Typotech currently operates in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Ethiopia, with expansion plans targeting the entire East African Community (EAC), including newly admitted member states such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and Somalia. Further entry into Central and West Africa is also in the pipeline.
Packaging, Kandara noted, has become the most dynamic segment of the industry, driven by rising consumer demand, urbanization, and the need for value-added presentation of products ranging from food and beverages to textiles.
“Everything that’s produced, from toothpaste to garments, must be packaged. Unlike commercial printing, packaging will never be replaced by digital alternatives,” he said.
Typotech is also responding to increasing demand for sustainable packaging solutions. The company ensures all consumables, particularly those used in food-grade applications, meet international safety and environmental standards.
This includes eco-friendly inks, biodegradable substrates, and non-toxic press chemicals.
“Our sustainability approach is strict. All imported materials must comply with local and global regulations,” Kandara stated.
“We’re committed to promoting safe and responsible printing across all markets.”
The company’s reorientation comes amid a global surge in demand for sustainable and high-quality packaging.
According to industry data from Smithers, Africa’s packaging market is projected to grow significantly by 2030, with East Africa expected to lead that growth due to its youthful population and expanding manufacturing sector.
To meet this demand, Typotech has partnered with internationally recognized manufacturers to deliver modern, scalable solutions.
Its portfolio now supports clients in newspaper printing, book printing, and commercial printing, with a core focus on packaging for paper, board, metal, and textile applications.
“Our goal is to be the first point of contact for any business or investor looking for high-end printing and packaging solutions in East Africa,” Kandara affirmed.
“If you haven’t spoken to Typotech, you haven’t explored the full potential of this industry.”
