The product is designed to help brands meet India’s emerging Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) mandates.
INDIA – UFlex, India’s leading multinational flexible packaging giant, has unveiled a breakthrough in sustainable packaging with the launch of its FSSAI-certified single-pellet resin system.
This innovation integrates recycled PET (rPET) and virgin PET into a single, high-purity pellet engineered specifically for food and beverage applications.
The product is designed to help brands meet India’s emerging Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) mandates while ensuring compliance with stringent food safety standards.
Set to transform how food-grade recycled plastics are adopted in India, the new solution allows FMCG companies to seamlessly transition to rPET without any changes to existing PET processing infrastructure.
The pellet ensures high clarity, mechanical strength, thermal stability, and a significantly lower acetaldehyde content, key parameters for safe and effective food contact materials.
The innovation comes in direct response to new Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations requiring brands to incorporate at least 30% recycled content in Category-1 rigid plastic packaging, such as PET bottles, by FY2025–26.
UFlex’s single-pellet solution aligns with both FSSAI and USFDA guidelines, which mandate validated decontamination protocols for recycled content in direct food contact applications.
Ashish Saxena, Joint President, Packaging Films Business at UFlex, described the solution as a game-changer, “We are pleased to offer our latest innovation, the single-pellet solution, which directly supports brands aiming to meet new FSSAI and EPR requirements.
“It reflects our commitment to scalable, sustainable packaging technologies that don’t compromise on safety or performance.”
The development also complements UFlex’s broader investments in circular economy infrastructure.
The company recently committed ₹317 crore (US$36.61m) to expand its recycling footprint with two new plants in Noida.
With an existing global recycling capacity of 72,300 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) and a further 39,600 MTPA on the way, UFlex is uniquely positioned to lead India’s sustainable packaging transition.
UFlex remains the only Indian company with USFDA approval to recycle all three major polymers, rPET, recycled polyethylene (rPE), and recycled polypropylene (rPP), for food-grade applications.
Its global operations across India, Poland, Egypt, and Mexico have collectively recycled over 5 billion post-consumer PET bottles and thousands of tonnes of mixed flexible plastic waste.
In FY25 alone, UFlex recycled 8,200 metric tonnes of flexible waste, reaffirming its leadership in advancing plastic circularity.
As regulatory frameworks become more ambitious, UFlex’s innovation offers a scalable, plug-and-play solution for brands seeking to meet compliance while contributing meaningfully to sustainable packaging goals.
