This impactful initiative, backed by equal investment from Coca-Cola and USAID totaling US$4 million, seeks to combat plastic pollution through innovative recycling solutions.

With Nigeria generating an estimated 2.5 million metric tons of plastic waste annually, concerted action is urgently needed to mitigate its adverse environmental and public health effects.

The NPSA’s primary objective is to recover approximately 49,000 metric tons of plastic waste in Nigeria while enhancing the collection capacity of over 24 aggregators and 9,500 collectors.

Furthermore, the program aims to create more than 10,000 green jobs, foster circularity in plastic waste management, and promote a cleaner, healthier environment.

Speaking on the partnership, Saadia Madsbjerg, President of The Coca-Cola Foundation, emphasized their commitment to supporting sustainable communities through innovative recycling solutions.

She hoped the program in Nigeria would drive increased collection and recycling rates, contributing to a more sustainable society.

During the launch event, Melissa Jones, USAID Mission Director, highlighted the employment opportunities that plastic collection and recycling offer, particularly benefiting small and medium-scale enterprises and entry-level workers.

USA Consul General Will Stevens reiterates the United States Government’s dedication to incentivizing recycling to avert plastic pollution and foster sustainable development.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment underscored the importance of the NPSA in shifting the perspective on plastic waste management, emphasizing the need for responsible stewardship and a paradigm shift away from disposable consumption.

This launch signifies a significant milestone in the collective efforts to combat plastic pollution and promote sustainable development in Nigeria.

It demonstrates USAID, The Coca-Cola Foundation, and TechnoServe’s commitment to driving positive change and building a more resilient and environmentally conscious society.
