This move reinforces the company’s commitment to innovation in the wine and spirits market, setting new standards with unprecedented levels of recycled content sourced from Europe.

Amcor Capsules has established innovative sourcing schemes, procuring recycled tin by tapping into end-of-life products such as car radiators, batteries, ship propellers, and bronze scraps from ornaments or statues.

Following recycling, the tin material is repurposed for capsules and capping purposes without altering the production process, lead time, or final product quality.

By integrating both pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled tin, Amcor Capsules achieves a remarkable reduction in carbon emissions, up to 70% cradle to gate, with certified GHG emissions reduced to 1.6 tonnes of CO2e per ton of tin.

Furthermore, the recyclability of tin products is validated through certification from the Institute Cyclos-HTP, with a confirmed recyclability rate of 99% in countries where metal and glass recycling streams prevail.

Bertrand Daru, Sustainability Director at Amcor Capsules, emphasized the company’s pride in its ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability.

This strategic shift not only delivers premium caps and foils but also aligns with customers’ environmental goals, extending the success of integrating recycled content into the screw cap range to the tin segment of the portfolio.

However, alongside this positive development, Amcor announced layoffs affecting 41 workers at its Des Moines location. This decision was attributed to the transfer of sealant and forming film production to other Amcor facilities.

The company underscored its continual assessment of strategies to stay competitive and meet market demands.

Amidst these changes, the Des Moines plant will maintain operations. With approximately 75 employees, it will focus on food packaging and serve clients such as Conagra’s Slim Jim, Capri Sun, and Hunt’s Snack Pack.

The impacted workers can apply for positions at other Amcor locations, and the company is grateful for their service and commitment.

The layoff announcement, negotiated by Teamsters Local 238, follows previous negotiations resulting in wage increases and additional worker benefits.

With its vast global presence and diverse workforce, Amcor remains dedicated to driving innovation while navigating evolving market dynamics.
