Amcor expands recyclable packaging production with investment in Italian facility

New manufacturing line strengthens supply of high-barrier recycle-ready films for European brands.

ITALY – Global packaging company Amcor is expanding the production capacity of its flexible packaging facility in Lugo di Vicenza, reinforcing its commitment to recyclable packaging solutions and supporting brand owners preparing for new European sustainability regulations.

The investment by Amcor Flexibles includes the installation of a new manufacturing line, laboratory and automated warehouse, enabling the plant to increase output of high-barrier recycle-ready films used in a variety of packaging formats.

The upgraded site will produce advanced materials such as AmLite HeatFlex, a recycle-ready film designed for retort and high-heat applications.

These materials are used in packaging solutions including lidding films and flexible pouches for the food and beverage, pet food and healthcare sectors.

The expansion also introduces a high-density automated warehouse equipped with temperature-controlled chambers that support the curing process of packaging materials, ensuring consistent product quality and performance.

According to Elena Peron, plant general manager at Amcor Flexible Lugo, the investment reflects the company’s broader sustainability commitments.

“The new facility is the result of Amcor’s pledge to develop all our packaging to be recyclable, reusable, or compostable,” she said.

“This expansion, combined with the Amcor team’s expertise, will support our customers in making the switch to recycle-ready packaging and contribute to a more circular packaging industry.”

Supporting Europe’s new packaging regulations

The expansion comes as packaging producers and brand owners across Europe prepare for the requirements of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which aims to improve recyclability, increase recycled content and reduce packaging waste across the bloc.

Amcor says its growing portfolio of recyclable and high-performance packaging materials is designed to help brands comply with these upcoming regulations while meeting consumer demand for more sustainable products.

Recent research released by the company indicates that European consumers are increasingly supportive of packaging containing recycled plastic, suggesting a favourable market environment for circular packaging solutions.

Broader innovation across packaging segments

The Lugo expansion is part of a wider innovation push by Amcor across multiple packaging segments.

The bottle design features a rounded base and curved shoulders intended to deliver a premium look while maintaining strong shelf appeal.

Available in 100 ml, 250 ml and 500 ml formats, the Mocha bottle includes a large decoration area and can be paired with a range of flip-top closures and pump systems, allowing brands to tailor dispensing solutions for products such as lotions, shampoos, conditioners and body washes.

As regulatory pressure and consumer expectations continue to reshape the packaging industry, investments such as the Lugo expansion highlight how global suppliers are accelerating the transition toward recyclable, high-performance packaging systems in Europe.
