Innovia Films launches recyclable BOPP film for fresh produce packaging

New monomaterial solution supports shelf life and EU recyclability targets.

UK – Specialty film manufacturer Innovia Films has introduced P2G BOPP Film, a recyclable packaging solution designed specifically for flow wrap applications in fresh produce, including pre-prepared vegetables.

The clear biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film has been developed as a monomaterial polypropylene solution, allowing it to be recycled within existing PP waste streams.

According to the company, the product aligns with the requirements of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which aims to ensure all packaging placed on the EU market is recyclable by 2030.

Designed for fresh produce packaging, the P2G film offers enhanced gas transmission properties, enabling better control of respiration rates in packaged fruits and vegetables.

This feature helps maintain freshness, improve product quality and extend shelf life throughout the supply chain.

“P2G represents the next generation of fresh produce packaging,” said Megan Hinkley, Senior Product Manager for Packaging at Innovia Films.

“It combines functionality, reliability and sustainability to meet the evolving needs of retailers, packers and consumers, while supporting the industry’s transition to more circular packaging solutions.”

Designed for performance and shelf appeal

Beyond its sustainability credentials, the film has been engineered to meet the performance demands of modern fresh food packaging.

It is heat-sealable on both sides, enabling consistent and secure sealing during high-speed packaging operations.

The film also delivers high optical clarity, allowing consumers to clearly view the packaged produce, while remaining printable to support branding and product information.

According to Innovia Films, the material retains strong puncture and impact resistance at low temperatures, ensuring that packaging integrity is maintained during refrigerated storage and transportation.

The film is also designed to perform reliably under varying climatic conditions encountered across supply chains.

Supporting recycled and bio-based content

P2G can incorporate chemically recycled and bio-sourced polymers certified under the ISCC mass balance framework.

This approach allows manufacturers to increase recycled or renewable content while maintaining the processing and performance characteristics required for high-quality produce packaging.

The launch reflects growing industry demand for recyclable flexible packaging solutions as food producers, retailers and regulators intensify efforts to reduce packaging waste and improve circularity.

The new product builds on Innovia Films’ ongoing investments in advanced film technologies. In 2025, the company introduced a Rayoart Coating Line at its production facility in Wigton, enabling the manufacture of PVC-free Rayoart graphics films for signage and visual communication applications.

With the launch of P2G, Innovia Films is expanding its portfolio of recyclable, high-performance polypropylene films, offering brand owners and fresh produce packers new options to meet sustainability targets while maintaining product quality and shelf appeal.
