Ascend acquires controlling stake in carpet recycler Circular Polymers

US – Ascend Performance Materials has acquired a majority stake in California-based recycler of post-consumer, high-performance polymers, Circular Polymers.

Ascend said the deal provides it with a consistent supply of high-quality PCR materials for its ReDefyne sustainable polyamides, launched at K 2022 in Düsseldorf, Germany, last month.

Circular Polymers reclaims and processes post-consumer carpets using rotary impact separator technology developed by the Broadview Group.

It has exclusive North American rights to the technology and says that it has redirected approximately 85 million pounds of waste from landfills into new goods since 2018. As part of the deal, the company has been renamed Circular Polymers by Ascend.

“We are focused on helping our customers reach their sustainability goals, and Circular Polymers by Ascend provides materials that offer strong performance with a considerably smaller environmental footprint, compared to other technologies like pyrolysis,” said Phil McDivitt, President and CEO of Ascend.

“Since we launched ReDefyne, the demand for our circular products has been significant across all segments of our business, including automotive, consumer, electronics, and high-performance fibers and textiles.”

David Bender, founder and CEO of Circular Polymers, will hold the remaining equity and stay on as CEO of the company, Ascend announced.

Ascend, a fully integrated producer of durable materials has a sustainability strategy based on three pillars: empowering people, innovating solutions, and operating without compromise.

The company has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2030 and recently announced two new efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of its products.

Ascend’s ReDefyne, is a portfolio of sustainable polyamides created with up to 100% pre- and post-consumer recycled polyamide 66 or 6 to provide a low carbon footprint and reliable performance, even in demanding applications, reports PR Newswire.

“We are focused on helping our customers meet their long-term sustainability goals with innovative, reliable products,” said Steve Manning, Ascend’s senior director for engineered materials.

“ReDefyne combines our expertise from Poliblend with our integrated operations and our global application development expertise to produce a recycled polyamide that performs in areas recycled materials have typically been ruled out of.”

ReDefyne products are third-party certified and Ascend is partnering with ITW Global Fasteners to pilot blockchain traceability according to the UNI EN 15343 through Plastic Finder’s Certified Circular Plastic program.
