USA – Avery Dennison has announced plans to transition its pharmaceutical portfolio to recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) liners by the end of the upcoming year.

This shift is not only aimed at reducing the environmental impact of the company’s pharmaceutical packaging but also at supporting its customers in achieving their sustainability objectives.

As part of this initiative, Avery Dennison will convert its PET30 and PET23 liners to rPET grades containing 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) material.

This transition is expected to not only aid customers in reducing scope 3 emissions and improving their respective carbon footprints but also aligns with the company’s 12-month validation period, adhering to its Pharma Change Management protocols.

Furthermore, Avery Dennison’s AD Circular program complements this transition by offering a recycling service for used film and paper label liners in European countries, contributing to a circular economy model.

The anticipated benefits of this move are substantial, with expected annual savings including approximately 532,000 kg of carbon dioxide and 2,266,000 liters of water, based on 2023 sales volumes and Carbon Trust calculations.

Avery Dennison ensures that the rPET liners meet the rigorous demands of the pharmaceutical industry, catering to applications such as syringes, eye drops, insulin pens, and security seals.

Key features of these liners include no impact on the conversion or label dispensing process, a PCR layer encapsulated between two layers of virgin material, and a silicone coating that retains quality and performance.

These liners are certified under the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), underscoring Avery’s dedication to sustainable manufacturing practices.

In addition to its pharmaceutical efforts, Avery Dennison is expanding its sustainability initiatives to its Wine and Spirits portfolio by introducing new 30% post-consumer waste (PCW) versions of three classic wine-label ‘facestocks’.

These recycled facestocks—Estate 8, Estate 17 Martele, and Bright White Felt—enable designers to maintain aesthetics while enhancing their environmental impact, responding to the growing consumer demand for sustainable packaging.

With the introduction of these new recycled facestocks, Avery Dennison’s portfolio now includes 13 options with PCW content.

Moreover, the company ensures that approximately 95% of its label materials adhere to the Avery Dennison Sustainable ADvantage standards, emphasizing less resource-intensive, compostable, recyclable, recycled content, or responsibly sourced materials.

Furthermore, Avery Dennison has launched a new recycling program to boost the rates of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) liner waste recycling across Northern California, US.

Through the AD Circular program, the company supports the collection of PET liner waste from label converters and wineries in Napa Valley and its surrounding area.

This initiative aims to aggregate waste for economical recycling until reaching a full truckload, subsequently delivering it to qualified recyclers.

These initiatives underscore Avery Dennison’s commitment to sustainability and aim to support the environmental goals of the wine industry, exemplifying its dedication to fostering a more sustainable future.
