KENYA – Bio Foods, a leading dairy processor in East Africa, has made a significant commitment to sustainability by pledging to adopt recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) in 50% of its packaging by 2026.
This move marks a crucial step forward in the company’s efforts to promote eco-friendly practices within the region’s dairy industry.
Rosalid Rwaru, Head of Sustainability at Bio Foods, explained the rationale behind the shift towards more recyclable packaging materials.
“We’re transitioning from translucent PET to clear PET, which is lighter and contains fewer problematic additives, aligning with the Kenya Plastics Pact Design Guidelines for Recyclability,” Rwaru stated.
“Our aim is to collaborate with like-minded producers to achieve sustainable plastic packaging across Kenya.”
This announcement follows Bio Foods’ recent sustainability initiative, where the company transitioned its 2-liter milk bottles from semi-transparent to transparent packaging.
According to the company, the change aimed to improve recyclability while maintaining product quality and safety, demonstrating Bio Foods’ commitment to integrating sustainability into its core operations.
“Sustainability is central to everything we do at Bio Foods,” affirmed a company spokesperson. “We’ve taken significant steps to show that sustainability can benefit people, the planet, and profit.”
The company’s second Sustainability Report, covering the period from July 2020 to June 2021, highlighted several achievements, including a 30% reduction in plastic usage for milk bottles and the utilization of 100% repurposed Kenyan plastic for yogurt cups.
“Looking ahead, Bio Foods remains committed to enhancing its packaging and transportation materials. We’re exploring manufacturing milk bottles from 100% recycled PET and reducing shrink wrap usage during transportation,” the spokesperson added.
Bio Food Products is a dairy company that has been pioneering new concepts in product development and packaging within the East African and the Sub-Saharan Region.
The company aims to create a business that not only produces the cleanest, best tasting and healthiest products but also takes into account our social and environmental impact.
“The world is facing unprecedented challenges, and we want our company to be part of the solution, not the problem.”
