AFRICA – Bboxx, a data-driven super platform, has achieved Gold Standard certification for its clean energy projects across five African countries, a milestone in the fight against climate change and energy poverty while unlocking significant market potential.

Bboxx connects consumers with innovative products across Africa, helping to build community resilience through clean technology solutions.

The newly certified projects span solar home systems, PAYGO clean cooking solutions, and solar-powered water pumps.

Together, they aim to deliver up to 60,000 carbon credits annually, offering a scalable model for sustainable development.

The program covers Bboxx’s operations in Rwanda, Kenya, Nigeria, Togo, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

These initiatives are expected to offset more than 20 million tons of carbon emissions, generating approximately US$100 million in carbon credits. They will also impact the lives of over 4 million customers across the continent.

The Gold Standard certification, a hallmark for voluntary carbon offset projects, ensures that Bboxx’s efforts deliver lasting social, economic, and environmental benefits.

“This certification cements Bboxx’s role as a leader in decentralized clean energy,” said Anthony Osijo, CEO of Bboxx.

“It demonstrates our commitment to innovation, social impact, and environmental stewardship, all while meeting the evolving expectations of our consumers. Our focus is on scalability and providing access to solutions that improve livelihoods and offer significant market opportunities.”

One key initiative under the program is Bboxx’s clean cooking solution, which replaces traditional cookstoves with efficient LPG stoves.

Families pay for their energy, creating carbon credits by reducing emissions from outdated, inefficient cooking methods.

Bboxx’s Solar Home Systems will also generate additional carbon credits each year. By providing access to renewable energy, these systems are transforming the lives of families and small businesses in remote and peri-urban areas.

Beyond powering homes and charging electronic devices, Solar Home Systems allow businesses to operate outside daylight hours, further promoting economic growth.

By integrating clean technology solutions into everyday life, Bboxx’s carbon credit initiative demonstrates the power of sustainable development to address both environmental challenges and energy poverty, while fostering economic opportunities across Africa.

Meanwhile, in July the company partnered with TotalEnergies Marketing Rwanda to scale Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) clean cooking in and beyond Kigali, Rwanda, following a successful pilot programme in 2023, with plans to reach 1 million people over the next 5 years.

For this clean cooking roll-out, Bboxx is providing its own technology, the Smart Cooking Valve, which sits on top of the LPG cylinder, and TotalEnergies will provide the cylinders and gas.

The Smart Cooking Valve, launched in August 2023, is a device that revolutionises gas usage; it locks onto the LPG cylinder and digitally controls customers’ gas access based on their mobile money payments, enabling a pay-as-you-cook financing model.

Few households can afford an entire gas refill in one payment, so this flexible payment system allows customers to pay for their day-to-day gas usage and reap the economic and health advantages by switching from traditional cooking methods like charcoal to more affordable and less polluting LPG.
