Constantia Flexibles unveils recyclable coffee packaging in collaboration with Delica

The new material structure offers enhanced barrier properties that lock in aroma and freshness.

AUSTRIA – Constantia Flexibles has launched a new recycle-ready coffee packaging solution in collaboration with Delica AG, part of Migros Industrie, marking a significant step toward sustainability in the coffee sector.

The innovation centres around EcoVerHighPlus, a mono-polypropylene (PP) laminate developed specifically for soft bag coffee packaging.

Designed to preserve the quality of both ground coffee and whole beans, the new material structure offers enhanced barrier properties that lock in aroma and freshness—key factors in premium coffee presentation and shelf life.

A standout feature of the EcoVerHighPlus packaging is its mono PP valve, which improves freshness by keeping oxygen and other gases out while allowing volatile gases to escape, helping to maintain optimal product quality throughout the shelf life.

“This project highlights the positive impact of close collaboration,” said Tobias Acker, Market Product Manager for Beverages at Constantia Flexibles.

“Thanks to our partnership with Delica AG, we have successfully launched one of the first recyclable-ready mono PP laminates for coffee soft bags on the market. This represents a meaningful step forward for both the industry and the environment.”

The laminate has been tested by Cyclos, a leading European institute for recyclability assessment, and achieved an impressive 95% recyclability rating in its unprinted version.

The material is a response to growing consumer and regulatory pressure to reduce packaging waste, especially in high-volume markets such as coffee.

Development began in early 2023, with trials carried out by Delica. These included shelf-life tests and coffee tastings to ensure the material maintained flavor and freshness.

Based on the feedback, Constantia Flexibles optimized the laminate to balance recyclability with necessary protective properties.

By October 2023, the company produced its first fully printed version of EcoVerHighPlus. A long-run production test in January 2024 at Migros confirmed that the material performed efficiently on existing packaging lines—an important milestone for large-scale adoption.

The launch aligns with Constantia Flexibles’ broader commitment to providing more sustainable flexible packaging solutions across various food and beverage sectors, without compromising on quality or performance.

As the industry continues to seek eco-friendly alternatives, the EcoVerHighPlus laminate offers a promising solution for coffee brands aiming to meet environmental goals while delivering a premium consumer experience.
