EGYPT – Egypt’s Waste Management Regulatory Authority has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UAE-based Tadweer Group, intending to advance Egypt’s waste management and recycling sector through collaborative investment, training, and knowledge exchange.
According to Egypt’s Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, the MoU is designed to explore investment avenues and public-private partnership opportunities in waste management and recycling.
Key focus areas include training, capacity building, and increasing awareness of recycling practices.
The MoU also provides for the exchange of studies, research, and critical information between the two entities.
Highlighting the scope of potential investments, Minister Fouad noted that one promising area is agricultural waste recycling.
Plans are in motion to establish a factory in New Valley dedicated to transforming palm frond waste into MDF wood.
The factory will be a collaboration between the Arab Organization for Industrialization, the New Valley Governorate, and the Waste Management Regulatory Authority.
This project will attract up to €70 million (US$74.23m) in investment.
Other prospective investments include a partnership with the Egyptian Petrochemicals Company to recycle used oils into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with an estimated investment of €530 million (US$562.03m).
To support this initiative, the Egyptian Cabinet has granted the Waste Management Regulatory Authority the authority to license companies to collect and recycle used cooking oils safely.
Another initiative focuses on recycling rubber waste to produce soft rubber powder, which can be used as an eco-friendly alternative for playground surfaces, artificial turf, and footwear.
This project, expected to attract an investment of €14 million (US$14.85m), emphasizes Egypt’s commitment to innovative recycling solutions.
Governor El-Zamlout shared that New Valley houses over 4 million palm trees, generating around 67,627 tons of palm frond waste annually.
The governorate prioritizes the safe disposal and recycling of this waste, which aligns with its broader goal of promoting environmentally sustainable practices.
Tadweer Group’s CEO, Ali Al Dhaheri, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting that the agreement emphasizes building local capacity and increasing recycling awareness.
He added that this collaboration signals a new chapter in regional waste management initiatives and reflects both parties’ commitment to sustainable, innovative solutions.
