Gaia Biomaterials partners RA International to bring compostable biodolomer to GCC markets

First customer deliveries of the solution are expected in Q1 2026.

GCC – Swedish firm Gaia Biomaterials has entered into an agreement with Dubai-based RA International to distribute its compostable plastic alternative, Biodolomer, across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

The partnership targets the growing need for eco-friendly packaging amid rising single-use plastic consumption in the area. First deliveries to customers are set for the first quarter of 2026.

Under the deal, RA International will create a specialized business unit to handle the Biodolomer line.

The agreement spans all GCC nations but starts with a focus on the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.

These countries grapple with waste management issues, as the UAE works toward zero waste to landfill by 2030 and Saudi Arabia advances its Vision 2030 goal of full landfill diversion.

Biodolomer consists of limestone-based material suitable for flexible and rigid packaging. It works with most plastic processing methods, including extrusion and molding.

The product holds compostability certifications in both the European Union and the United States. Unlike traditional plastics, it avoids microplastic release and contains no per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances or extra chemicals.

When composted, it yields calcium-rich output useful for landscaping and soil enhancement.

Peter Stenström, CEO of Gaia Biomaterials, described the expansion as a key step. He noted that the company had fielded numerous inquiries from the region in recent years, praising RA International’s thorough research and regional expertise.

Soraya Narfeldt, founder and CEO of RA International, highlighted the suitability of compostable options given the limited recycling facilities in the GCC.

She mentioned that discussions with stakeholders over the last six months revealed strong demand for such materials.

In a related development, Gaia Biomaterials recently secured a US$5 million rights issue to support production growth.

This funding will help scale up Biodolomer manufacturing, including for new applications like thin sheets for thermoformed trays and clamshells.

The company also obtained a Biodegradable Products Institute certification in the US for Biodolomer’s film uses, such as bags and aprons.

Additionally, trials for Biodolomer Ocean, a variant for biodegradable fishing nets, are underway in Kenya and South Africa, with plans to expand pilots in 2025 to reduce marine plastic waste by up to 10 million tons globally if adopted widely.
