UGANDA – Food delivery platform Glovo has partnered with Zembo Electric Bikes, marking a significant step towards achieving zero emissions and creating more employment opportunities for women and youth in the food and FMCG delivery sectors.
Both companies report that 50 riders have joined the platform through this partnership and are optimistic that more will follow.
Glovo praises the partnership, noting that it will enhance the growth of e-commerce in Uganda while providing valuable opportunities for women and youth.
Although Ivy Maingi, Glovo’s Country Director, did not disclose specific details of the partnership, she mentioned that both companies are engaging with financial institutions and potential partners to support this initiative further.
“One of the key things with e-commerce is the flexibility it offers. You can create your own job, and we are contacting financial institutions to support this,” Maingi said during the partnership announcement.
The collaboration is expected to empower women and youth by providing access to training and employment opportunities.
This move is also anticipated to bolster Glovo’s brand image in Uganda and beyond, as the company seeks to solidify its market presence.
According to a recent market study, Glovo is the most preferred e-commerce platform in Uganda and Kenya, holding a market share of 33% in food delivery and 46% in grocery delivery.
The Ugandan e-commerce market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.8% between 2024 and 2028.
Market analysts have praised Glovo’s initiative, recognizing it as a pioneering effort towards zero emissions in the e-commerce sector.
Zembo has also commended the partnership, highlighting its potential to leverage the growing e-commerce market and expand its reach.
James Obarawski, Zembo’s CEO, stated, “E-commerce growth is particularly visible among the youth and women. We are eager to work with Glovo in the delivery business to reduce emissions while facilitating their work.”
This partnership follows Zembo’s pact with MOGO Uganda, a subsidiary of Eleving Group, to expand access to electric mobility solutions nationwide.
Under the agreement, MOGO Uganda will provide affordable financing options for various mobility needs.
“We are thrilled to partner with Zembo Motorcycles to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility solutions in Uganda,” said Kotrynya Lucunaite, Business Operations Manager of MOGO Uganda.
“Our collaboration aims to make electric motorcycles more accessible and affordable to a wider range of customers, support sustainable transportation initiatives, and contribute to a cleaner environment.”
With the financing option, MOGO allows its clients to purchase their preferred electric motorcycle model from Zembo at an affordable down payment of UGX 500,000 (US$133.25), after which they would pay weekly installments that fit their budgetary limits.
