The companies plan to showcase this development at Fachpack 2025 in Nuremberg, Germany.

GERMANY – Heidelberg and Solenis have joined forces to create an industrial method for applying barrier coatings to paper packaging in a partial and economical way.
According to a joint announcement, the process integrates Solenis’ barrier technology into Heidelberg’s flexographic web printing system on the Boardmaster machine.
This setup allows barriers to transfer precisely to specific areas of the paper web during production.
The collaboration addressed key difficulties in selecting materials that block water, water vapor, hot and cold liquids, oils, and fats.
These materials also meet sustainability standards for eco-friendly packaging.
In a statement, a Heidelberg representative explained that the goal involves using the Boardmaster’s components to apply Solenis’ coatings, making the technology accessible to packaging manufacturers without major overhauls.
“This integration enables targeted application only where needed, reducing material use and costs,” the representative added.
Solenis noted that the process supports the shift toward sustainable alternatives in the packaging sector.
Packaging producers can now adopt this method quickly to enhance paper-based products for food and other applications.
In related developments, Smart Planet Technologies launched a biopolymer edition of its EarthCoating barrier for paper cups.
This version mixes biobased PLA resin with a mineral blend, creating a compostable and recyclable option.
The minerals allow removal during recycling, similar to clay fillers in paperboard. Lecta introduced Linerset FP, a barrier base paper for flexible packaging like bags, pouches, and wraps.
Available in weights from 40 to 78 g/m², it suits food and industrial uses with strong translucency.
A report indicates the global barrier-coated flexible paper packaging market will expand from US$18.21 billion in 2025 to US$30.37 billion by 2034, at a 5.85% compound annual growth rate.
Europe holds the largest share at 34% in 2024, driven by demand for plastic-free solutions in food and retail.
Additionally, in August 2025, Mondi plc released FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate, a paper-based solution for food packaging that provides high performance against moisture and grease.
Cosmo Specialty Chemicals introduced oil- and grease-resistant coatings in February 2025, aimed at sustainable applications.
