JohnsByrne expands US footprint with acquisition of Municipal Packaging

USA – US-based premium packaging specialist JohnsByrne has acquired Los Angeles-headquartered Municipal Packaging, strengthening its national manufacturing footprint and establishing a direct operational presence on the US West Coast.

The transaction brings Municipal Packaging’s two production facilities and a workforce of approximately 75 employees into the JohnsByrne group.

Following the deal, JohnsByrne now operates five facilities across Niles, Illinois, and Los Angeles, significantly expanding its geographic reach and production capacity.

JohnsByrne said the acquisition is a strategic move aimed at enhancing its capabilities in premium and speciality packaging, while enabling closer collaboration with customers on the West Coast.

The expanded footprint is also expected to improve service levels, lead times and supply chain resilience for brands operating across multiple US regions.

President and CEO Kevin Andrews said the deal aligns with the company’s ambition to build a nationally recognized packaging platform.

“JohnsByrne is committed to building a national brand recognised for innovation, quality and customer partnership,” he said.

“Municipal Packaging has an outstanding reputation, and their team shares our dedication to excellence and entrepreneurial spirit.”

Municipal Packaging will be fully integrated into the JohnsByrne organization, with the two companies working to align their commercial activities under a single go-to-market strategy in the coming months.

JohnsByrne said this integration will support a more unified customer offering across design, manufacturing and value-added services.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen JohnsByrne’s ability to serve a wide range of end markets, including health and beauty, consumer products, entertainment, spirits and financial services.

With growing demand for high-quality, differentiated packaging in these segments, the company sees scale and geographic diversification as key competitive advantages.

Municipal Packaging president and CEO Matt Helm will remain with the business and continue to lead the expansion of JohnsByrne’s West Coast operations.

“Joining JohnsByrne is a tremendous opportunity for Municipal Packaging and our customers,” Helm said.

“JohnsByrne’s resources and expertise will allow us to build on our strengths and deliver even greater value.”

JohnsByrne is backed by GHK Capital Partners, a middle-market private equity firm based in Greenwich, Connecticut.

GHK focuses on control investments in industrial businesses across North America and has been actively supporting platform expansion strategies in the packaging and manufacturing sectors.

The deal reflects continued consolidation in the US packaging industry, as private equity-backed groups pursue acquisitions to broaden capabilities, access new regional markets and respond to brand owners’ growing expectations around quality, innovation and reliable national service coverage.
