INDIA – Lucro, an India-based recycling company, has joined forces with the restaurant chain Good Flippin’ Burgers to implement a water bottle recycling initiative in the country, aiming to bolster the efficiency of collecting and recycling used water bottles within the region.

Under this partnership, Lucro will oversee the collection of used water bottles from Good Flippin’ Burgers outlets and manage their recycling process, diverting them from landfills.

The initiative follows an integrated and streamlined approach, with Lucro’s dedicated team swiftly collecting bottles once storage at Good Flippin’ Burgers reaches capacity.

Since its inception, the initiative has successfully collected and recycled over 30,000 bottles, resulting in a significant reduction of approximately 993kg in carbon dioxide equivalent atmospheric emissions.

Lucro operates as a multifaceted waste management, recycling, and product manufacturing company, producing flexible packaging products like shrink and stretch wrap from recycled plastic.

Meanwhile, Good Flippin’ Burgers, a fast-casual restaurant chain, boasts a network of 35 locations across Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune.

Lucro’s endeavor aligns with various recycling initiatives in India. For instance, Coca-Cola India introduced the country’s first fully recycled PET packaged water bottle last August, produced by Srichakra Polyplast on a Starlinger PET bottle-to-bottle recycling line.

Ravindra PV, managing director at Srichakra Polyplast, expressed pride in supplying the rPET resin for India’s inaugural beverage bottle made from 100% rPET, emphasizing the company’s commitment to producing food-safe rPET pellets for various food packaging applications.

The Starlinger PET bottle-to-bottle recycling line at Srichakra’s production facility in Hyderabad, Telangana, was the first of its kind installed in India two years ago, featuring technology capable of processing post-consumer PET bottles to produce rPET pellets suitable for food contact packaging.

Starlinger’s sales director Andreas Fuchs highlighted the ongoing trend for recyclable packaging solutions during Interpack 2023 in Düsseldorf, Germany, emphasizing the importance of simplifying packaging to enhance recyclability.

Srichakra Polyplast has also placed orders for two additional units of the PET bottle-to-bottle recycling lines from Starlinger, slated for delivery in early 2024.

Coca-Cola India emphasized that its endeavor complements the Indian government’s Swachh Bharat Mission – an initiative to drive environmentally sustainable development – as the new bottles are fully recyclable and can be repurposed into new bottles.
