Kersh has also announced his decision to pursue a long-held ambition to enter local politics.

UK – Martin Kersh, Executive Director of the Foodservice Packaging Association (FPA), is set to leave his role after more than two decades to become joint Chief Executive of the Packaging Federation, working alongside long-serving CEO Dick Searle.
The announcement was confirmed today by both organizations.
Kersh, who has led the FPA for 22 years, will make his final appearance at the association’s Environment Seminar on October 29, where members will also gather for a farewell reception.
Beyond his packaging industry commitments, he has also revealed plans to pursue a personal ambition of entering local politics as an active member of the Liberal Democrats.
FPA Chair Mike Revell paid tribute to Kersh’s longstanding leadership. “Martin’s contribution to the FPA over the last 22 years has been fundamental in securing the position the association finds itself in today. He has become a highly respected figure within foodservice packaging – recognized as the voice of the FPA across the industry,” Revell said.
Packaging Federation Chair Ron Marsh welcomed Kersh’s appointment as a joint CEO, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen the Federation’s influence.
“His appointment will help the Packaging Federation to grow, building on the strong foundations laid by Dick Searle. Their skillsets are highly complementary, creating a perfect fit,” Marsh noted.
Searle, who has led the Federation for 19 years, said the move was a natural step in the organization’s evolution.
“After 19 years leading the Packaging Federation, I suggested sharing with Martin the challenge of taking the Federation to the next stage of its development,” he said.
Reflecting on his transition, Kersh highlighted the strong ties between the two organizations.
“The FPA and the Packaging Federation have long enjoyed excellent relations, and that will continue. I leave the FPA in an excellent position with an outstanding team and am looking forward to joining the Packaging Federation to work alongside Dick, who has so expertly built it into the force it is today.”
The appointment comes at a pivotal time for the UK packaging sector, which faces both opportunities in sustainable innovation and challenges from tightening regulations.
Industry observers say the combined leadership of Searle and Kersh could position the Packaging Federation as a stronger voice in shaping packaging policy and sustainability dialogue across the UK.
