Mattoni 1873 installs cutting-edge canning line from KHS to boost circularity

CZECH REPUBLIC – Mineral water giant Mattoni 1873 has taken a significant step towards enhancing sustainability by installing a state-of-the-art canning line from German supplier KHS.

The company, renowned for its iconic mineral water brand, has modernized its operations in line with its mission to improve circularity and reduce environmental impact across Central Europe.

The new canning line, located in Karlovy Vary, marks the first time Mattoni 1873 has introduced recyclable beverage cans into its portfolio.

The cans are made from approximately 70% recycled aluminum, aligning with the company’s sustainability goals.

According to Mattoni 1873’s executive president, Alessandro Pasquale, the addition of the canning system complements the brand’s packaging options, enabling it to offer a full range of non-alcoholic beverage containers.

Pasquale noted, “Our ultramodern system now completes our packaging portfolio, allowing us to meet market demand more efficiently.”

The new KHS line features an Innofill Can C can filler, which can process up to 20,000 containers per hour.

It also includes a palletizer, depalletizer, blending system, and two shrink packers, among other components.

These advanced technologies provide flexibility, allowing the line to handle various formats and products, including beverages from the Pepsi portfolio, which were previously imported from outside the country.

A commitment to sustainability and circularity

Mattoni 1873’s investment of over €8.2 million in this system is part of a broader sustainability effort. The company is dedicated to protecting its natural springs while reducing carbon emissions.

A decade ago, Mattoni 1873 restored its original railway line to transport goods, reducing over 20,000 truck journeys annually. This initiative has not only reduced emissions but also contributed to easing road congestion.

In line with its goal of achieving full circularity, Mattoni 1873 has also launched the zálohujme.cz initiative advocates for a nationwide deposit system to boost recycling efforts in the Czech Republic.

Currently, only 30% of beverage cans are collected for recycling, and the company aims to increase this figure significantly.

The installation of the canning line is the latest milestone in Mattoni 1873’s over 30-year-long partnership with KHS.

This collaboration has seen multiple investments in cutting-edge equipment across various plants, helping the company maintain its position as the largest distributor of soft drinks in Central Europe.

With the new system now operating in three shifts, Mattoni 1873 continues to blend its rich history with modern technology to ensure sustainable growth for future generations.
