Mondi invests US$104M to boost capacity and sustainability at Poland Mill

POLAND – Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has completed a €95 million (US$103.69 million) investment at its Świecie containerboard mill in Poland.

This strategic move will enhance the mill’s kraftliner production capacity by 55,000 tonnes annually, helping to meet the growing demand for heavy-duty packaging.

The investment involves major upgrades, including the rebuild of paper machines PM2 and PM5, the installation of a new anaerobic treatment plant with an integrated cooling system, and improvements to the pulp mill, recycled fiber line, and energy recovery system.

These upgrades will not only boost production but also reduce water usage, wastewater emissions, and improve energy efficiency, aligning with the company’s environmental goals.

This expansion is part of Mondi’s broader sustainability framework, the Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030), which focuses on achieving science-based net-zero targets.

The recent enhancements will improve the quality of the company’s product offerings, addressing customer demand for superior packaging solutions while reducing the environmental footprint.

Mondi Świecie’s Managing Director, Tomasz Katewicz, praised the project’s completion, highlighting the team’s skills and dedication, which were instrumental in delivering high-quality paper and achieving operational excellence.

The investment also underscores Mondi’s commitment to the region, providing competitive employment opportunities and contributing to local economic growth.

In addition to its Świecie mill upgrade, Mondi recently expanded its operations with a US$694.08 million acquisition of several Schumacher Packaging facilities across Germany, the Benelux region, and the UK.

This acquisition includes seven corrugated converting plants, two solid board mills, and four solid board converting plants, significantly increasing Mondi’s presence in Western Europe.

Schumacher Packaging Group, known for its innovative, customized packaging solutions and high-performance digital printing for corrugated materials, enhances Mondi’s production capabilities.

The newly acquired facilities include two mega-box plants in Germany, located in Ebersdorf and Greven, which are poised further to strengthen Mondi’s position in the packaging industry.

These plants boast cutting-edge production speeds and operational efficiency, positioning Mondi to significantly enhance its e-commerce and FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) packaging services.

This acquisition comes shortly after Schumacher Packaging sold its Polish subsidiary to Saica Group in a separate €327 million (US$357.99m) deal.

Despite these changes, Björn and Hendrik Schumacher will continue to play key roles in the business. Björn Schumacher will serve as a strategic advisor, while Hendrik will assume the role of Chief Operating Officer for the solid board division.
