Sabert acquires Colpac to strengthen its presence in UK

The deal includes the handover of all land and kit at the Flitwick

UK – Sabert Corporation Europe has acquired Colpac Limited, a UK-based leader in sustainable paperboard packaging, in a move that strengthens its presence in the US$40 billion global foodservice packaging market.

The acquisition, finalized on July 31, 2025, integrates Colpac’s expertise in eco-friendly solutions for the food-to-go and industrial sectors into Sabert’s operations, enhancing its portfolio of sustainable packaging options.

In a statement, Sabert CEO Paul McCann emphasized the strategic importance of the deal: “This acquisition marks a milestone in our commitment to the UK market and our focus on expanding innovative, sustainable solutions.”

“Both companies share a culture of sustainability and quality, which is the foundation for lasting customer relationships.”

Colpac, founded in 1937 and headquartered in Flitwick, Bedfordshire, brings advanced design and manufacturing capabilities, including modified atmosphere packaging and domestic Kraft bowl production, to Sabert’s European operations.

According to Colpac’s managing director, Andrew Grimbaldeston, the partnership is a natural fit: “Colpac’s heritage and paperboard expertise complement Sabert’s portfolio.”

“Together, we’re better equipped to deliver a broad, innovative range of sustainable food packaging solutions.”

The acquisition is expected to enhance Sabert’s agility and manufacturing capacity, particularly in the UK and European markets, while advancing its sustainability goals.

In a related development, Berlin Packaging has partnered with Origin Materials to distribute sustainable PET bottle caps, targeting the US$65 billion global caps and closures market.

The partnership, announced recently, focuses on Origin’s PET 1881 caps, made from 100% post-consumer recycled PET.

These mono-material caps simplify recycling by eliminating the need to separate them from bottles, supporting circular economy principles.

Origin Materials CEO John Bissell highlighted the collaboration’s potential: “Berlin Packaging’s global network expands our reach for the 1881 caps and sets the stage for future innovations.”

Berlin’s sustainability vice-president, Balaji Jayaseelan, added: “We’re thrilled to bring these groundbreaking PET caps to our customers, aligning with our commitment to measurable environmental impact.”

The caps, produced via thermoforming, reduce packaging weight and extend product shelf life, offering both sustainability and performance benefits.

A recent report noted that Origin Materials also partnered with Royal Hordijk Packaging on July 30, 2025, to mass-produce PET caps, including tethered designs compliant with the EU’s Single-Use Plastic Directive, further advancing recycling efficiency.
