Scanfill’s new recycled PP packaging film meets food-contact standards with prevented ocean plastic sourcing

SWEDEN – Scanfill has introduced Scanfoil rPP POP, a transparent recycled polypropylene packaging film approved for food contact, containing 30% post-consumer recycled material sourced from coastal areas of Southeast Asia to help brands meet upcoming PPWR requirements.

The Swedish packaging manufacturer’s new offering, developed under the European Regulation 2022/1616 for recycled plastic food-contact materials, addresses a long-standing market gap where demand for high-grade recycled PP has consistently outpaced supply.

Scanfill area sales manager Niklas Linde stated that the company can now offer a transparent foil based on recycled PP approved for food contact, which represents a major development for the industry.

30% Post-Consumer Content and Advanced Recycling Enable Food-Contact Approval

The material, produced with 30% post-consumer recycled PP, is sourced from plastic cups collected in coastal parts of Southeast Asia through the Prevented Ocean Plastic programme, preventing waste from entering marine environments. 

The advanced recycling process is essential for obtaining food-contact approval, with Scanfill conducting additional testing to ensure safety after receiving the material from its supplier. 

Scanfill sustainability specialist Karl Banke noted that the recycling method enables large volumes of recycled PP, demonstrating that it is possible to recycle consumer-use PP and making the product a significant advancement for the packaging sector. 

The product is fully recyclable and traceable, with customers able to identify the exact geographical origin of the recycled plastic.

Transparent Foil Matches Virgin PP Performance and Supports PPWR Readiness

The film comes in various transparency grades and performs comparably to virgin PP, with large-volume supply capabilities available to customers across Europe. 

As the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation approaches its application date of 12 August 2026, Scanfill’s solution offers packaging converters and brand owners a viable route to meeting recycled content requirements for food-contact flexible packaging. 

The product also supports Extended Producer Responsibility compliance through its fully traceable material sourcing and end-of-life recyclability. 

The Prevented Ocean Plastic programme has been validated through independent third-party certification, ensuring that collected material is genuinely diverted from ocean-bound waste streams. 

Scanfill positions the product as a direct response to the European packaging industry’s need for sustainable, high-performance alternatives that do not compromise on food safety or regulatory compliance.
