Sibanye-Stillwater’s new SA recycling platform targets gold, silver, platinum group metals

SOUTH AFRICA – Sibanye-Stillwater has consolidated Reldan and Metallix with its Columbus autocatalyst recycling facility into a unified global platform, creating an integrated precious metals recycling network capable of end-to-end recovery of gold, silver, platinum, palladium, rhodium and iridium.

The South African mining group spent a total of EUR 247 million (US$266.8 million) to acquire Reldan and Reldan Mexico in March 2024 and Metallix in September 2025, which now operate alongside the existing Columbus Autocat Recycling facility in the US. 

Refining operations are located in the United States and India, while processing and commercial activities extend across Asia and other global markets. 

The platform draws on decades of combined experience across industrial, electronic, jewellery and autocatalyst recycling streams.

End-to-End Recovery Across Electronics, Autocatalysts and Industrial Waste Streams

Reldan brings expertise in electronic scrap, jewellery materials and industrial residues, while Metallix specialises in processing complex precious metal-bearing waste streams. 

Columbus Autocat Recycling adds significant catalytic converter recycling capacity, completing the group’s full-service offering. 

CEO Richard Stewart stated that the platform will create a more connected recycling network capable of processing increasingly complex waste streams while managing very high recovery rates. 

Stewart added that the combined business can now offer end-to-end recovery and refining services across multiple precious metals sectors, positioning the group as a comprehensive partner for manufacturers seeking to close material loops in their supply chains.

Strategic Positioning for Circular Economy Growth

The consolidation comes as demand for critical and precious metals continues to rise, with manufacturers increasingly seeking secondary sources of raw materials to support supply security and sustainability goals. 

Stewart noted that the combined business offers precious metals recovery, refining and analytical services through a growing international network, benefiting from long-standing customer relationships across electronics, automotive, jewellery and industrial sectors. 

The group plans to continue investing in recycling technology and processing capabilities, with Stewart expressing confidence that combining the expertise of Reldan, Metallix and Columbus Autocat Recycling provides a foundation for future growth in sustainable precious metals recovery.
