MOROCCO – SUEZ, a global leader in circular water and waste management solutions, has announced four new agreements in Morocco to optimize water resources and ensure sustainable waste management.
Due to population growth and climate change, Morocco is facing growing water stress and waste management challenges. SUEZ is deepening its long-standing partnership with the Kingdom to support environmental sustainability.
SUEZ has operated in Morocco since the 1950s and remains dedicated to advancing the country’s environmental transition.
“These four new agreements reflect our commitment to continue investing in Morocco to support the Kingdom’s environmental transition. We are proud to work closely with Moroccan authorities and businesses on these initiatives,” stated Sabrina Soussan, SUEZ’s Chairman and CEO.
Supporting sustainable waste management in Rabat and Kenitra
In collaboration with partners SOMAGEC and JET CONTRACTORS, SUEZ has activated a contract with the Etablissement de Coopération Intercommunale AL ASSIMA for the development and operation of the Oum Azza waste treatment and recovery centre in Rabat.
Serving over 2 million residents across 13 municipalities in the Rabat-Salé area, this facility processes 850,000 tonnes of waste annually.
It is set to become a “green landfill,” contributing to the circular economy by treating liquid residues (leachate) and producing biogas. Less than half of the waste will be landfilled (47%), significantly advancing waste recovery efforts.
SUEZ has also secured a €120 million (US$129.36m), 20-year contract to construct and operate a similar waste treatment and recovery centre in Kenitra, a major city with nearly 500,000 inhabitants.
This new facility will transform the traditional landfill model, recovering biogas from waste fermentation to produce sustainable local energy.
As SUEZ’s third “green landfill” in Morocco, following successful projects in Rabat and Meknes, the Kenitra site represents a step forward in waste-to-energy conversion.
The Meknes center, SUEZ’s first green landfill in Morocco, already generates 5,500 MWh annually, making it energy-self-sufficient.
Advancing water network performance and research partnerships
SUEZ signed a memorandum of understanding with Morocco’s Safari Group to create a joint venture focused on innovative, digital solutions to optimize water network management for Regional Multiservice Companies.
This collaboration aims to enhance water network efficiency across the region.
In addition, SUEZ is partnering with the MAScIR Foundation at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) to launch a research program on treating and recovering organic waste.
This initiative builds on a March 2024 agreement to explore new waste treatment solutions.
The expanded collaboration will also encompass water management technologies, including advancements in seawater desalination.
SUEZ reaffirms its commitment to environmental stewardship in Morocco through these comprehensive projects, supporting the Kingdom’s goals for a sustainable, resilient future.
