Tata Steel Nederland commissions new production line for steel packaging

The new line brings the entire manufacturing process onto a single site.

NETHERLANDS – Tata Steel Nederland (TSN) has commissioned a new production line dedicated to packaging steel, strengthening its capabilities in food-safe and sustainable steel packaging solutions.

The newly launched line integrates Tata Steel Nederland’s proprietary Trivalent Chromium Coating Technology (TCCT) and brings the full manufacturing process for packaging steel onto a single site.

According to the company, this consolidation is expected to streamline logistics, reduce supply chain complexity and improve overall production efficiency for customers.

TSN said its TCCT-Protact solution meets stringent food safety requirements while eliminating the need for an additional lacquer layer during customer processing.

By removing this step, the technology reduces the use of chemicals, lowers production costs and shortens lead times.

The TCCT technology was developed exclusively by Tata Steel Nederland, which also licenses the solution to other steel producers across Europe.

The company positioned steel packaging as one of the most sustainable packaging materials, highlighting recycling rates of more than 95% in the Netherlands.

Steel’s magnetic properties enable efficient sorting in waste streams, supporting closed-loop recycling and contributing to a circular economy for products such as food cans and aerosol containers.

TSN also noted that steel packaging offers extended shelf life, helping to reduce food waste across the value chain.

Commenting on the development, Arne Hoogervorst, packaging manager at Tata Steel Nederland, said the TCCT technology supports both environmental and regulatory goals.

He noted that the approach ensures compliance with current and future chemical-use legislation, including the EU’s REACH regulations, while also improving workplace safety by reducing exposure to hazardous substances.

Hoogervorst added that when combined with Protact, TSN’s polymer-coated packaging steel, the TCCT solution provides an eco-friendly alternative that meets the highest food safety standards and simplifies customers’ manufacturing processes.

“No extra lacquer layer is needed, which means lower costs, fewer chemicals and a shorter supply chain,” he said, adding that the company is working closely with customers to drive innovation in safer and more efficient packaging solutions.

Tata Steel Nederland operates through two main business units: Tata Steel IJmuiden, which hosts its primary steelmaking operations, and Tata Steel Downstream Europe, where further processing for packaging and other applications is carried out at multiple sites across the region.

The new production line reinforces TSN’s strategic focus on value-added, sustainable steel products for the packaging industry.
