The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and Environment merges with EXTR:ACT to form new alliance

GLOBAL – The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and Environment has merged with EXTR:ACT to form the Food and Beverage Carton Alliance (FBCA).

The alliance aims to promote beverage cartons as sustainable, renewable, and circular packaging solutions.

Annick Carpentier, FBCA’s Global Advocacy Executive Director, said, “Through FBCA’s Global Centers of Expertise, Advocacy, and Communications, we will provide the evidence and benchmarks needed to lead the way in sustainability progress.

“We look forward to working with global partners to drive a circular bioeconomy while maximizing functionality and efficiency across the life cycle.”

Expanding its influence beyond Europe, FBCA aims to unite beverage carton manufacturers and paperboard suppliers to strengthen the food and beverage carton sector.

The alliance seeks to enhance performance, sustainability credentials, and long-term viability by bringing together industry leaders and global stakeholders.

FBCA plans to leverage its expertise to shape robust regulatory frameworks for food packaging worldwide.

Patrick Verhelst, FBCA Board President, said, “Our industry is working tirelessly to design fully renewable and sustainable packaging solutions that meet the needs of both consumers and the planet.

“We are excited to expand globally and champion the role of beverage cartons in building a more resilient, low-carbon future.”

FFRA’s Plastic Film Recycling Directory gains industry support

In related news, the new Plastic Film Recycling Directory, developed by the Flexible Film Recycling Alliance (FFRA), will improve recycling access for flexible film materials such as plastic bags, wraps, and polyethylene films.

The directory is a resource for businesses, municipalities, and consumers to identify recycling programs, facilities, and partners.

The Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) announced its support for the initiative on January 17. FPA President & CEO Dan Felton said the directory “represents a major step forward in enhancing recycling access and advancing a more circular economy for flexible films.”

This aligns with FFRA’s mission to advance, expand access to, and promote the recycling of flexible plastic films.

Patrick Krieger, Senior Vice President of Sustainability at the Plastics Industry Association—which oversees the FFRA initiative—praised the directory as “an essential step toward increasing plastic film recycling rates across America.”
