This milestone translates to 210,000 kilograms less plastic used annually.
FINLAND – Valio has exceeded its 2026 plastic reduction target in single-serve packaging two years ahead of schedule, achieving a 22.5% decrease by the end of 2024 compared to 2022 levels.
The original target was a 15% reduction by 2026.
This milestone translates to 210,000 kilograms less plastic used annually, the equivalent of 10 million plastic shopping bags.
It forms part of Valio’s voluntary Green Deal commitment and reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to support Finland’s circular economy and sustainability goals.
Key contributors to this achievement include the switch to recyclable cardboard pots for products like quark and pudding, and an 8% reduction in plastic used in 200g yogurt packaging.
These efforts are complemented by eliminating detachable lids, straws, and spoons from single-serve packs and using thinner plastic films across various products.
Valio aims for all its packaging to be fully recyclable and reusable by 2030, with 80% of materials sourced from renewable or recycled inputs.
These goals align with Finland’s broader Green Deal objectives to combat climate change, conserve biodiversity, and promote sustainable resource use.
In line with EU legislation, Valio is also adapting to the Single-Use Plastics Directive, which mandates that caps on beverage containers of up to three liters must remain attached to the packaging.
The transition to tethered caps began in early 2023 and is set to be completed by July 2024. This change affects around 200 Valio products, including milk, cream, smoothies, and berry soups, and requires significant adjustments in packaging operations and equipment investments.
“The change has required extensive planning and coordination with our packaging suppliers. From a recyclability standpoint, keeping caps attached ensures they are collected and processed, rather than ending up in the environment,” says Jussi-Pekka Lumme, Packaging Development Manager at Valio.
Valio’s surveys strongly support resealable packaging despite some consumer debate around plastic caps. Consumers value the convenience, portability, and ability to store packages horizontally in refrigerators.
All Valio cartons with caps sold in Finland are made from 100% renewable materials, including bioethanol-based plastics derived from sugarcane by-products.
As part of the renewal, recycling instructions are also being updated. Cartons with caps should now be disposed of with cardboard recycling; the plastic and cardboard are separated through a soaking process at the recycling plant.
“We are committed to helping consumers recycle more easily. Clear instructions on packaging, coupled with sustainable design, help reduce the use of virgin plastics and lower our carbon footprint,” adds Juhana Pilkama, Head of Packaging Development at Valio.
He notes that packaging innovation remains a central pillar of Valio’s climate strategy. By 2025, all Valio packaging will be recycle-ready, and by 2035, the company aims to achieve net-zero milk emissions.
“Our packaging must serve its core purpose—protecting the product and preventing food waste—while minimizing environmental impact. Recyclable and renewable materials play a key role in achieving this balance,” Pilkama concludes.
