UK – Win Win Water has introduced a new bottled water range featuring 100% plant-based, fully biodegradable bottles, developed in collaboration with TotalEnergies Corbion.
The bottles, made from Luminy PLA, aim to tackle the environmental challenges of traditional plastic packaging while delivering high-quality alkaline electrolyte water.
The entire bottle – including the label and cap – is crafted from Luminy PLA, a bioplastic derived from sustainably sourced sugarcane.
The material is toxins-free, ensuring a safe and eco-friendly alternative to conventional plastic bottles.
Designed for sustainability, the bottles fully break down within 90 days in commercial composting facilities while remaining durable enough for multiple uses.
By utilizing renewable, plant-based materials, Win Win Water seeks to reduce plastic pollution and support initiatives that remove ocean waste while empowering vulnerable communities.
Derek Atkinson, Vice President of Sales at TotalEnergies Corbion, praised the innovation, stating, “Win Win Water is revolutionizing sustainable hydration with natural alkaline electrolyte spring water. More water companies are adopting PLA bottles, helping to end plastic pollution due to the recyclable and compostable nature of Luminy PLA bioplastics.”
Growing demand for plant-based bottles
The shift towards plant-based, reusable water bottles is gaining traction. Last year, Bottle Up introduced what it claimed to be the UK’s first fully reusable, pre-filled, plant-based water bottle.
Made from sugarcane grown in Brazilian grasslands, the BPA-free bottles offer a renewable and recyclable alternative to single-use plastics.
In the UK alone, over 7.7 billion single-use plastic water bottles are consumed annually, with plastic waste from bottles accounting for over half the litter found in the River Thames.
Founded in Amsterdam in 2019, Bottle Up is tackling this crisis by producing reusable bottles in Wolverhampton. The company pre-fills them with spring water from Elmhurst to minimize their carbon footprint. Dishwasher-safe, the bottles are designed for long-term reuse.
To enhance consumer appeal, Bottle Up offers bottles in three colors, each with a distinct personality and durable design.
The company has also forged partnerships with Accor Group—which owns Ibis, Mercure, and Sofitel hotels—to encourage the adoption of reusable bottles in hospitality.
Currently, Bottle Up’s plant-based bottles are available at major retailers, including Morrisons, Ocado, WH Smith, The Co-op, BP, Whole Foods, and Amazon.
The company has sold over 50,000 bottles with BP and is now the top-selling still water brand on Amazon.
With more brands embracing biodegradable and reusable packaging, the future of bottled water is shifting toward sustainability—one plant-based bottle at a time.
