UK – Aldi is set to launch what is reportedly the UK’s first supermarket own-label wine in an aluminium bottle, offering shoppers a more sustainable packaging alternative.
The Costellore Pinot Grigio, priced at £5.99 (US$7.65) for a 75cl bottle, will be available from 14 April 2025.
The lightweight 95g aluminium bottle is fully recyclable and significantly lighter than traditional glass, making it easier to handle and transport while reducing carbon emissions.
This initiative supports Aldi’s broader sustainability strategy and efforts to shrink its environmental footprint.
“Our buying teams are always looking for ways to deliver greater value and greener choices,” said Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK.
“Shoppers want products that make a difference, and we’re proud to lead with innovations like this aluminium wine bottle as part of our commitment to sustainable packaging.”
The wine, which features citrus and orchard fruit notes, is sourced from Italy and bottled in the UK at a facility powered by renewable energy.
To bring the product to market, Aldi partnered with Broadland Drinks, a UK-based beverage company focused on eco-conscious packaging.
“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Aldi on this launch,” said Catherine Smith, Commercial Director at Broadland Drinks.
“Packaging is the biggest contributor to a wine’s carbon footprint, so switching from glass to aluminium is a significant step in reducing emissions and meeting demand for low-carbon alternatives.”
The aluminium wine bottle debut follows Aldi’s recent announcement to eliminate cork sleeves from its own-brand wine bottles in the UK—a first among UK supermarkets. This move is expected to save 38 tonnes of aluminium and plastic packaging each year.
The change affects 46 wine varieties, including Côtes du Rhone, Rioja Reserva, and Atlantique Rosé. Following a successful in-store trial in March 2024, Aldi aims to roll out the sleeve-free packaging across all its own-label corked wines by the end of 2025.
“Sustainability is a key priority for our customers,” said Luke Emery, Aldi UK’s National Sustainability Director.
“Introducing naked corks is another step forward, and we’re proud to be the first to implement this across our full range of quality own-brand wines.”
