BELGIUM – Amcor, a global leader in responsible packaging solutions, has inaugurated its European Innovation Center in Ghent, Belgium.
This new facility is dedicated to collaborating with brands and retailers across Europe to develop packaging solutions that are both consumer-friendly and environmentally sustainable.
The Amcor Innovation Center Europe (AICE) is part of Amcor’s global network of packaging innovation hubs, which also includes centers in the US, South America, and the Asia-Pacific region.
By establishing a presence in Europe, Amcor is better positioned to address the unique needs and preferences of European markets.
One of AICE’s primary goals is to pioneer new material technologies that enhance the sustainability and performance of packaging.
This includes developing recyclable mono-material solutions as alternatives to mixed-material packaging and exploring bio-based and recycled polymer alternatives.
The center is also researching high-barrier paper packaging and vapor-deposited nanocoating to improve packaging sustainability further.
The AICE features state-of-the-art facilities that support the entire packaging development process.
The Customer Engagement Center provides space for collaborative sessions and consumer focus groups, allowing packaging appeal and usability to be tested in simulated retail and home settings. The on-site prototyping lab enables the quick creation and testing of various packaging solutions.
Amcor has set ambitious goals to make all its packaging recyclable, compostable, or reusable by 2025, and to increase its use of recycled materials.
The AICE building itself is designed and built according to BREEAM sustainability certification standards.
“With the opening of the Amcor Innovation Center Europe, we are taking a significant step towards creating more sustainable and innovative packaging solutions,” says Michael Zacka, President of Amcor Flexibles Europe, Middle East, and Africa.
“Through collaboration and cutting-edge technology, we can provide our customers with complete brand solutions that meet their specific requirements.”
A growing consumer demand for sustainable packaging solutions is driven by increasing awareness of environmental issues and a desire for more eco-friendly options.
Many brands and retailers are actively seeking packaging innovations that are both environmentally friendly and consumer-friendly.
However, developing and implementing new material technologies and processes can be costly, and the price of sustainable packaging materials is often higher than traditional alternatives.
This financial challenge can make it difficult for brands and retailers to adopt sustainable packaging solutions on a large scale.
Another potential challenge is balancing the environmental benefits of sustainable packaging with performance.
Sustainable materials may not always offer the same functionality and protection as traditional materials, which could impact consumer satisfaction and acceptance.
