ATP Adhesives invests US$70M in US plant for eco-friendly adhesive production

The facility will specialize in solvent-free, water-based adhesive technologies.

USA – ATP Adhesives, a specialist in solvent-free adhesive technologies, has launched its North American operations with a major expansion in the United States.

The company announced plans to build its first U.S. manufacturing facility in Columbia, South Carolina, investing US$70 million to produce high-performance tapes that support reduced environmental impact.

According to a statement from the firm, the 127,000-square-foot plant will create 130 new jobs and start operations in July 2026, targeting manufacturers in the U.S. and Canada.

The new site focuses on solvent-free adhesive systems, which cut volatile organic compound emissions and odors when compared to solvent-based alternatives.

This approach aids industries like packaging by enabling cleaner bonding processes for materials such as films and labels.

ATP, known for its engineering roots in Germany and Switzerland, aims to shorten lead times and strengthen supply chains through local production.

The facility will handle everything from product trials to full-scale manufacturing, allowing closer work with customers on custom solutions.

“Launching ATP North America and building our first U.S. solvent-free facility marks a major milestone in our global growth,” said Daniel Heini, CEO of ATP Adhesives, in a recent statement.

He added that the move brings the company’s expertise directly to North American markets.

Dirk Henke, managing director and U.S. leader for ATP North America, highlighted the practical gains.

He noted that combining European know-how with U.S. manufacturing will deliver faster support and cost savings for clients using these tapes in applications like acoustic insulation and heat shields.

South Carolina officials welcomed the project, with Governor Henry McMaster stating it will bring substantial economic benefits to the Midlands region.

The state offered incentives to attract the investment, drawing on its growing reputation as a hub for advanced manufacturing.

ATP’s entry into the U.S. adds capacity for these innovations, particularly in sustainable packaging where adhesives play a key role in recyclable designs.

The company plans to ramp up output to meet needs in renewable energy and automotive sectors as well.

With production set to begin next year, the Columbia plant stands to enhance options for firms seeking efficient, low-emission bonding without overseas delays.

In related developments, Henkel AG & Co. KGaA expanded its eco-adhesive production in early 2025 with a new line in Germany, focusing on low-VOC formulas for flexible packaging.
