Berry Global enhances Danish Dry Mortar Industry with sustainable PCR film bags

DENMARK – Berry Global has partnered with Marlon, a Danish dry mortar company, to supply its NorDiVent form-fill-seal (FFS) film, a packaging solution incorporating 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content.

This collaboration supports Marlon’s sustainability goals while maintaining high performance in packaging.

The NorDiVent film is engineered to meet the rigorous demands of dry mortar packaging. Its durable, waterproof construction protects against moisture, minimizes dust, and allows air release, making it ideal for outdoor storage.

Søren Hammer, Production Manager at Marlon, highlighted the dual focus on sustainability and performance, “The ongoing reduction in virgin material usage and incorporation of recycled plastic are critical elements in improving the sustainability of our packaging.

“Specialist products such as ours also require top-tier protection and convenience to ensure quality and customer satisfaction. Thanks to Berry’s technical expertise, we’ve achieved these goals without compromise.”

Through their collaboration, Marlon has transitioned from using 100% virgin plastic NorDiVent bags to a version containing 30% PCR content.

Additionally, the film has been downgauged by 7%, reducing material usage while maintaining its strength and functionality.

Neal Geryl, Business Development Director at Berry Global Flexible Films, emphasized the shared commitment, “Berry and Marlon prioritize sustainability across operations. It’s gratifying to see partnerships like this achieve meaningful results that benefit both our businesses and our customers.”

Berry’s broader initiatives aim to enhance the recyclability of packaging while reducing its environmental footprint.

These efforts include increasing the use of renewable resource-based polymers, incorporating refill and reuse systems, and ensuring that recycled polymers maintain traceable certifications and high technical performance.

Strategic growth through mergers

In a related development, Berry Global and Amcor have filed a joint proxy statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), marking a significant step toward their merger.

The all-stock transaction, announced in November 2024, is set to create a unified leader in consumer and healthcare packaging solutions.

The merged entity will offer a comprehensive portfolio spanning flexible films, containers, closures, and dispensing systems.

Amcor CEO Peter Konieczny commented on the merger’s vision, “This combination accelerates growth by focusing on customer needs, elevating sustainability, and expanding into higher-margin, faster-growing categories.”

Shareholders from both companies will meet on 25 February 2025 to finalize the agreement, positioning the new entity as a key player in sustainable packaging innovation.
