Borouge launches UAE’s first medical-grade LDPE to strengthen local healthcare supply chain

The additive-free low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is engineered for use in pharmaceutical and medical packaging.

UAE — Borouge Plc has unveiled the first medical-grade low-density polyethylene (LDPE) produced in UAE, boosting its healthcare manufacturing and industrial diversification goals.

The new material, Bormed LE6607-PH, was announced during the ADIPEC 2025 exhibition and conference in Abu Dhabi.

Developed using Borealis’ proven Bormed technology, the additive-free polymer is designed for pharmaceutical and medical packaging applications such as blow-fill-seal bottles, ampoules, and sterile containers.

The innovation underscores Borouge’s commitment to advancing regional healthcare capabilities through localized, high-quality production.

Manufactured at Borouge’s Ruwais facility, Bormed LE6607-PH complies with both EU and US pharmacopoeia standards, ensuring exceptional purity and minimizing extractables and leachables in final packaging.

The company said the material also supports aseptic processing, guaranteeing compatibility with global pharmaceutical packaging requirements.

“By streamlining access to high-quality medical materials, we are proactively advancing our healthcare portfolio with locally manufactured polymers that meet international standards,” said Hazeem Sultan Al Suwaidi, CEO of Borouge.

“This launch positions Borouge at the forefront of healthcare-grade production in the UAE, strengthening our leadership across the region.”

The introduction aligns with the UAE’s Make It in the Emirates initiative, a national program aimed at expanding the country’s industrial base and raising the manufacturing sector’s contribution to GDP from AED 133 billion (US$36 billion) to AED 300 billion (US$81 billion) by 2031.

The initiative also promotes local innovation and the substitution of imported goods with UAE-made alternatives.

Bormed LE6607-PH follows the earlier success of Bormed RG868MO, Borouge’s first UAE-made healthcare polymer introduced earlier in 2025.

Together, these materials mark a pivotal step toward establishing the UAE as a regional hub for medical-grade polymer production and supply chain resilience in healthcare packaging.

The milestone comes months after the formation of Borouge Group International, created when ADNOC and OMV combined their shareholdings in Borouge Plc and Borealis AG and jointly acquired Canada-based Nova Chemicals.

The merger created the world’s fourth-largest polyolefins producer, headquartered in Vienna with regional offices in the UAE, Calgary, Pittsburgh, and Singapore.

With the launch of Bormed LE6607-PH, Borouge continues to strengthen its position as a strategic enabler of medical innovation, supporting the UAE’s long-term industrial and healthcare development goals.
