GERMANY – Carbios and Hündgen Entsorgungs GmbH & Co. KG (Hündgen), a leading expert in waste management logistics, sorting services, and recycling of recyclable materials, announce the signing of a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding.

This agreement pertains to the sourcing, preparing, and recycling of 15,000 tons per year of post-consumer PET waste using Carbios’ recycling technology at its first commercial plant in Longlaville, slated to commence operations by the end of 2026.

The partnership capitalizes on Hündgen’s expertise and network in sourcing and preparing light packaging waste collected from German households.

This PET waste will be prepared into flakes suitable for recycling using Carbios’ enzymatic depolymerization technology. This process yields food-grade PTA and MEG, further re-polymerized into PET.

The collaboration with Hündgen significantly contributes to securing most of Carbios’ feedstock needs for its inaugural commercial plant in Longlaville, France.

With a targeted capacity of 50,000 tons per year upon entire operation, the plant is currently under construction.

This sourcing milestone builds upon previous agreements, including partnerships with Landbell Group for food trays from Germany and the successful CITEO tender for trays in France.

Situated strategically close to waste supplies in Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg, the Longlaville plant optimizes logistical efficiency.

Carbios’ enzymatic depolymerization process accommodates various types of PET waste, including those traditionally challenging to recycle with existing technologies.

This includes multilayered, colored, and opaque packaging waste and polyester textile waste, offering comprehensive circular recycling solutions.

Emmanuel Ladent, CEO of Carbios, underscores the significance of the partnership with Hündgen, highlighting Carbios’ innovative recycling technology’s ability to process diverse PET waste.

This versatility enhances flexibility in sourcing while maintaining price competitiveness compared to high-demand clear bottles.

Ladent also emphasizes the success of Carbios’ local sourcing strategy, advocating for the strategic location of recycling plants near waste supplies.

Christian Hündgen, CEO of Hündgen Entsorgungs GmbH & Co. KG, expresses enthusiasm for participating in a leading European project in PET non-bottle recycling.

He emphasizes the importance of innovative technologies and cross-border cooperation in establishing new standards for plastic packaging recycling.

Meanwhile, in February, Carbios inked a deal with engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services provider De Smet Engineers & Contractors (DSEC) to construct a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling plant.

The facility, located in Longlaville, France, is set to be commissioned in 2025.

As part of the agreement, DSEC will be responsible for the project’s management and detailed engineering, including procurement assistance and management of Carbios’ partners.
