SOUTH AFRICA — South Africa-based flexographic printer Clomark has achieved a remarkable 18–20% reduction in overall energy consumption after retrofitting its Gidue Combat press with GEW’s AeroLED UV curing technology, according to a new case study published by GEW.
In an interview, Shyam Chirkoot, Managing Director of Clomark, spoke with David Lyus, GEW’s Sales Manager for the region, about the company’s journey towards greater energy efficiency and production flexibility.
The upgrade involved installing nine 140 W/cm E2C lamps and seven 40cm, 395nm AeroLED cassettes, allowing Clomark to benefit from GEW’s ArcLED hybrid system, which enables seamless switching between mercury arc and LED curing technologies.
Founded in the mid-1970s as a supplier of automotive trim, Clomark has since evolved into a full-fledged flexographic printing company offering a diverse portfolio, from self-adhesive labels and shrink sleeves to cartons, pouches, and printed inserts.
The company relocated to Midrand in the 1990s and has since grown steadily, employing 50 people, many of whom have been with the company for over 15 years.
Chirkoot explained that the decision to adopt LED UV technology was driven by both technological maturity and sustainability goals.
“We had been considering LED for years, but the ink systems weren’t ready. Now that LED inks match the performance of conventional ones, the move made economic sense,” he said.
The retrofit has not only lowered power usage but also expanded Clomark’s production capabilities. The ArcLED system enables the team to use online embossing, debossing, matte, gloss, and cold foil finishes, enhancing the company’s creative flexibility and product quality.
Clomark’s commitment to excellence is underscored by its international certifications, including ISO 9001, ISO 45001, and ISO 14001, and its compliance with Unilever’s Responsible Sourcing Audit (URSA).
The company also praised GEW’s local distributor, SArepco, for its role in facilitating the transition.
“SArepco’s technicians worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth installation. Their expertise gave us confidence throughout the process,” Chirkoot added.
As the printing industry faces increasing pressure to reduce environmental impact and operational costs, Clomark’s success demonstrates how LED UV retrofits can deliver both sustainability and performance.
“We believe we’re using the best inks, papers, and now the best LED UV system in the world,” said Chirkoot. “We encourage our customers to give us the impossible, and we’ll make it happen.”
