Partnership with Huhtamaki and Xampla introduces plant-protein coating technology to replace traditional plastic linings in takeaway packaging.

UK – Just Eat Takeaway.com is expanding its rollout of plastic-free takeaway boxes across 10 European markets through a partnership with Huhtamaki and materials innovator Xampla.
The initiative builds on earlier launches with Lieferando in Germany and Austria, and will now extend to Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia and Spain.
The rollout brings Xampla’s Morro Coating technology to a wider range of restaurants and delivery partners across the platform’s European network.
The packaging uses Morro Coating, a material developed by Xampla as an alternative to plastic coatings typically used in takeaway food containers.
The coating is made from natural plant proteins without chemical modification and is designed to deliver grease and moisture resistance without relying on conventional plastic barriers.
Manufactured by Huhtamaki, the takeaway boxes are made from sustainably sourced corrugated paperboard and are described as fully recyclable and compliant with the Single-Use Plastics Directive.
Unlike plastic-lined paper packaging, boxes using Morro Coating can be processed through existing paper recycling streams without requiring separation of plastic layers.
According to the companies involved, the packaging is engineered to perform across a wide variety of cuisines and food types commonly ordered through delivery platforms.
The boxes are designed to maintain rigidity and retain heat even when used with greasy or moisture-rich meals, applications that have traditionally required plastic-coated packaging to prevent leakage and structural failure.
Alexandra French said the expansion reflects growing regulatory pressure and market demand for scalable plastic alternatives.
“Europe is moving fast on packaging regulation, and the demand for materials that can genuinely replace plastic has never been stronger,” French said.
“This expansion is about scale. We have proven Morro Coating works; now we are rolling it out across 10 European markets through one of the continent’s largest food delivery platforms.”
She added that high-volume sectors such as food delivery present an important opportunity for replacing conventional plastic packaging materials with natural alternatives that can meet performance requirements.
A spokesperson for Just Eat Takeaway.com said the partnership forms part of the company’s broader sustainability strategy.
“We’re excited to partner with innovative companies that share our vision of eliminating single-use plastic waste and making responsible choices that create value for our partners and consumers,” the spokesperson said.
“Expanding our collaboration with Xampla marks a significant milestone in accelerating the adoption of plastic-free packaging across the on-demand delivery industry.”
Industry analysts note that food delivery platforms are increasingly exploring fibre-based and recyclable packaging solutions as governments across Europe tighten rules on single-use plastics and waste management.
