Mondi’s re/cycle CompressWrap is used to wrap Ekornes’ mattresses for protection during transportation.

ENGLAND – Sustainable packaging leader Mondi has introduced a paper-based solution, re/cycle CompressWrap, for Nordic furniture producer Ekornes’ mattresses, replacing traditional plastic wrappers.
According to the company, this innovative packaging protects high-end mattresses during transportation while prioritizing environmental responsibility.
The CompressWrap system features two components: a compress wrapping and a secondary outer wrapper. Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper 95/5, with its thin protective coating, ensures secure vacuum-sealing during compression.
After compression and rolling, the mattress is encased in FunctionalBarrier Paper Reduce, which provides robust sealing to safeguard the product during transit.
This design adheres to the 4evergreen Design for Circularity Guidelines, ensuring recyclability and supporting a circular economy.
In a statement, Ekornes Beds managing director Pål Aage Nordahl expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting that the new packaging protects their mattresses while meeting customer expectations for sustainable solutions.
The paper-based packaging integrates seamlessly with Ekornes’ existing machinery, enabling a cost-effective transition without compromising efficiency.
Consumers also benefit from the design, which allows for easy unwrapping without sharp tools, enhancing the user experience.
Mondi’s foaming papers industry group manager, Ola Forsberg, emphasized the collaborative approach, stating that the solution was tailored to meet Ekornes’ technical needs while advancing sustainability goals.
The initiative demonstrates how industry-specific challenges can be addressed through innovative packaging that balances functionality and environmental impact.
In related developments, a report from August 2025 highlights Mondi’s continued focus on sustainable packaging with the launch of Ad/Vantage Smooth Brown Semi Extensible, a new kraft paper designed for industrial and consumer packaging.
This substrate combines strength, extensibility, and puncture resistance, making it suitable for sharp-edged or heavy items like dry food and spare parts.
Its smooth surface supports coating adhesion and printability, offering a versatile solution for form-fill-and-seal packaging.
Mondi’s technical sales service representative, Sabrina Klösch, noted that the kraft paper fills a market gap by delivering high performance and compatibility with existing production lines.
This latest collaboration with Ekornes and the introduction of new kraft paper underscore Mondi’s ongoing commitment to developing recyclable, paper-based alternatives that meet diverse industry needs.
