USA – Origin Materials has commenced commercial production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) caps at its manufacturing center in Reed City, Michigan.
According to co-founder and CEO John Bissell, the launch marks a significant milestone in bringing sustainable PET closures to market.
The facility’s first Origin CapFormer System is now operating at commercial volumes, and it is expected to produce hundreds of millions of caps annually.
Bissell emphasized that the initial CapFormer line is performing as expected and is set to impact the industry strongly.
He expressed optimism about further technological and manufacturing advancements at the site.
Designed to comply with PCO 1881 standards, these caps aim to enhance recycling circularity and sustainability in the domestic packaging industry.
Origin Materials stated in a press release that its PET cap technology is engineered to improve the sustainability and performance of various packaging solutions, including emerging applications.
“We are continually refining our technologies and manufacturing techniques so that future lines will achieve even higher production rates and improved unit economics,” said Bissell.
“The sky is the limit as we begin to address the US$65 billion closures market.”
He further noted that market interest remains strong, with demand suggesting that the company can sell every cap it produces.
Origin Materials has already signed multiple memorandums of understanding (MOUs) and continues to qualify new prospects while expanding its pipeline of potential customers.
Bissell hinted at upcoming announcements regarding additional MOUs and customer partnerships in the near future.
In May, Origin unveiled its all-PET caps and closures, a groundbreaking innovation in packaging sustainability.
This includes the world’s lightest carbonated soft drink (CSD) cap, compatible with the PCO 1881 neck finish, manufactured entirely from 100% PET, whether virgin or recycled (rPET).
Bissell highlighted the significance of this innovation, noting that the PCO 1881 neck finish is widely adopted across the beverage industry.
He emphasized how Origin’s 100% PET cap could revolutionize recycling circularity and product performance within the sector.
Origin’s advancements in PET closure design and manufacturing—once thought unattainable—offer key advantages, including enhanced recyclability, improved shelf life, and reduced manufacturing waste.
The lightweight 1881 closure optimizes PET’s superior mechanical properties over conventional materials like HDPE and PP, minimizing plastic usage while maintaining durability.
Additionally, the cap incorporates tamper-evident features, providing a better user experience through tactile feedback and audible cues upon opening.
With these innovations, Origin Materials is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable packaging solutions, setting new standards for performance and circularity in the closures market.
