RDM Group, Ecopol introduces recyclable barrier board with PVOH film

Its ability to block contaminants while being environmentally friendly makes it an ideal choice for packaging applications.

ITALY – RDM Group, a leading producer of recycled cartonboard, has partnered with Ecopol, a global leader in the production of water-soluble and biodegradable films and delivery systems, to introduce a recyclable barrier board.

This partnership combines RDM’s recycled fibre cartonboard with Ecopol’s polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) functional film, providing a customisable and eco-friendly packaging solution that meets diverse performance requirements, particularly for food items and products sensitive to aroma.

Historically, incorporating recycled cartonboard into food packaging has been problematic due to contamination risks from food-grade mineral oils that originate from processing equipment, which often seep into products.

The value of PVOH film

Ecopol’s PVOH film is a transparent, biodegradable polymer that dissolves in water and offers strong barrier properties.

Its ability to block contaminants while being environmentally friendly makes it an ideal choice for packaging applications, especially for products sensitive to aroma or those needing extended shelf life.

The film can be customised for various applications, including resistance to oxygen, grease, moisture, and mineral oils, making it suitable for diverse product types, such as food packaging.

“This pioneering collaboration is an example of the new, cross-industry links that need to be created to meet the demands of the PPWR,” said Krzysztof Krajewski, RDM Group’s chief innovation and sustainability officer.

“Our goal is to create a more sustainable, recycling-friendly material of the future to drive increased circularity.”

“We are now looking for brands and converters to develop new types of packaging using this new PVOH-based solution and invite potential partners to start projects with us,” added Krajewski.

According to both parties, the newly developed barrier board, enhanced with PVOH film, overcomes this issue and offers Class A recyclability within conventional fiber-recycling systems.

“By pairing our functional barrier film with RDM Group’s board, we will create packaging that’s not only functional but fully recyclable,” said Mauro Bonfiglio, Ecopol’s vice president of sales and marketing.

“This will be a true step forward in eliminating virgin plastic waste and making sustainable solutions the new standard.”

“Our partnership with RDM Group enables brands to adopt recyclable, functional packaging without compromising performance, paving the way for scalable circular solutions.”

This collaboration not only demonstrates the potential of circular design in fibre-based packaging but also paves the way for a more sustainable future in the industry, leaving a positive impact on the environment and the packaging sector.

Last month, RDM Group introduced Multiboard Barrier – a polyethylene (PE)-coated cartonboard engineered to meet performance demands while addressing environmental challenges.
