Diageo Angola advances circular economy with glass waste management MoU

The initiative, which includes the installation of eight glass recycling points across hospitality venues, is part of Diageo’s broader “Spirit of Progress” agenda.

ANGOLA – Diageo Angola has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nação Verde and Embalvidro to launch the company’s first Glass Waste Management Project in Angola.

The collaboration marks a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to sustainable production and waste reduction, in alignment with Diageo’s global “Spirit of Progress” agenda and Angola’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework.

At the heart of the initiative is the installation of eight dedicated glass recycling points at Diageo’s partner locations within the on-trade sector, which includes hotels, bars, and restaurants.

These stations will serve as centralized hubs for the collection of used glass bottles, helping reduce the volume of glass waste entering landfills and the environment.

Environmental social enterprise Nação Verde will spearhead the construction, maintenance, and operational management of these collection points.

The collected glass will then be processed by Embalvidro, a local company specializing in the recycling and reintegration of glass into the manufacturing chain, furthering a circular economy model.

This partnership reflects a growing trend across Africa, where public-private collaborations are driving sustainable waste management.

In South Africa, for example, mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations for packaging have significantly increased recycling rates in sectors such as PET and paperboard.

Similarly, Kenya’s push for plastic alternatives and Rwanda’s long-standing ban on plastic bags underscore a continent-wide shift toward greener practices.

In Angola, the timing is especially critical. The country is grappling with mounting urban waste, limited recycling infrastructure, and rising demand for sustainable business practices from both consumers and policymakers.

Diageo’s initiative is expected to provide a replicable model for other manufacturers and beverage producers operating in the region.

Speaking on the development, Diageo Angola reiterated its belief in “purposeful partnerships” and the importance of local innovation in addressing global sustainability challenges.

The company hopes that this initiative will not only reduce environmental impact but also promote behavioral change and community involvement in waste separation and recycling.

This MoU sets a precedent for future initiatives, with the potential to scale up operations and integrate other forms of packaging waste, including plastics and metals, into the recycling framework.

It’s a clear signal that Africa’s beverage industry is ready to embrace circularity, and Angola is taking its first bold steps.
